SEWAGE PROBLEMS: In 2018 there are huge sewage problems on the south coast. Rendezvous Road (by Massys), Hastings, Worthing and the St. Lawrence Gap areas are affected with raw sewage in the roads and bad smells. They are working to correct this but it's a massive problem, so you might want to avoid booking hotels in this area for a bit. Hotels you may want to consider that are not affected include: Accra Beach Hotel, The Island Inn and the Radisson. Rockley/Accra Beach is ok as is Carlisle Bay & Pebbles Beach.

Hi, I’m Lois Swanson. Welcome to my Insider Tips on Barbados. I love the island and want to share my tips to help you enjoy your holiday to the utmost.
I am a member of the Barbados Elite Club; a frequent contributor to Forums on Barbados on Fodors.com; and I'm also a Destination Expert on TripAdvisor.com
After 36 trips to Barbados (all at least 7 to 14 days), based on the information I present, those involved in tourism consider me a Barbados expert and an authority on most things happening on the island.
I constantly update this website with new information I have gathered, so check back often. I will include current information on hotels, restaurants, menus, and updates on various things on the island.
People are curious as to why I do this. Have you ever been frustrated with information that is out-of-date when you purchase a new travel guide? I was, so in 1999 after continually answering the same questions from lots of people who knew of my expertise, I decided to write an Insider Tips Sheet which I sent out free to people all over the world. That sheet (which grew to over 30 pages!!) eventually evolved into this website. In my reviews, I try to give honest opinions of various attractions, restaurants, hotels, etc. By doing so I feel that I can help visitors get the best value for their money.
I am passionate about Barbados. It is a fantastic island with friendly people, varied scenery, gorgeous beaches, lots of activities, fabulous restaurants, historical sites, Jacobian mansions, traditional plantation style great houses, and the best rum in the world. I want to share that passion with others so they may experience the best of Barbados when they visit. November 2016 marks 50 years of independence. I'm sure there will be many special celebrations all month.
I am from Fairfax, Virginia, but return often to the island we love. If there is anything that is not included in my website that you have questions about, please write me for answers at:
For many restaurants, hotels, villas, or car rentals, if you mention that Lois Swanson recommended, I know they will give you their best pricing and service, although some businesses will offer my readers a special discount. Just a reminder that for all of your reservations, book early so that you can get what you want whether it is transportation or restaurant reservations.
